Who We Are

District of Columbia International School (DCI) is a public charter school serving over 1600 racially and economically diverse students in grades 6-12 from across the District of Columbia. We aim to provide our students with a world-class education that empowers them to follow their passions and change the world. DCI's education centers on an International Baccalaureate curriculum, advanced language learning in Chinese, Spanish, and French, and a culture focused on student agency supported by 1:1 technology.

Position Overview: DCI is hiring a full-time Director of Athletics and Student Life. This position will lead and manage DCI's middle and high school Athletic Program. DCI has 20 sports and 49 teams including league winning volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball and track & field teams. This position will help build DCIs' athletic program into one of the top programs in the city. The Director of Athletics and Student Life also oversees our student life and other extracurricular programs including international trips in a way that enhances the DCI Mission.

Salary Range: $96,820 - $121,323 (Starting salary is determined by education and years of relevant experience)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • A Master's Degree in Sports Management is preferred.
  • Previous experience teaching as a Physical Education teacher and/or Athletics Director is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to use multiple technology platforms to guide instruction and communicate with students and families and proficiency with communicating using G-Suite tools, including Gmail, is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Clear a background check.

Key Qualities & Skills:

  • Lead the Athletics Team and ensure DCI maintains a robust and well-rounded athletics program that allows students to pursue their interests and passions through sports.
    • This should be in alignment with DCI's approach to Restorative Justice and focus on academic excellence.
  • Oversee our student life and other extracurricular programs including international trips in a way that enhances the DCI Mission.
  • Manage a team consisting of an Assistant Athletic Director, Director of Activities, Athletics Specialist, Experiential Learning Coordinator, and Athletic Trainer.
  • Plans, implements, and promotes the DCI Athletics program including scheduling games for various sports, ensuring a robust athletic program, and overseeing a range of sports and athletic events.
    • Oversees the scheduling of all athletic contests, fields, facilities, transportation, game officials, and any other logistics to ensure a successful athletic program.
  • Coordinate the Athletics and Activities budget in alignment with Principals and other Senior Leaders to maintain a robust program.
  • Ensure appropriate hiring, training, development, and accountability of all athletic and Health & Physical Education (HPE) staff to include first aid and instructional support.
  • Oversee the instructional approach for Health and Physical Education in alignment with our Chief Academic Officer.
    • Follow through on all instructional leadership responsibilities as the leader of the HPE Team - support strong supervision, hiring, and training of that department.
  • Ensure effective communication and marketing of the DCI Athletics and Activities programs with support from the Director of Communications.
    • Maintain the Athletic Booster Club and support a strong partnership with parents and families to increase engagement and student support.
  • Oversee the DCI International Voyager Trips in alignment with school Principals and other staff to ensure the program is strong and aligned to the DCI Mission.
  • Develop programming aligned to athletics and activities that supports more consistent engagement from all student groups.
  • Support the work of our Cross Functional Team (X-Team) and be a key owner, advisor, and / or participant in broader organizational events.

  • Embrace professional development through attending coaching meetings, school/content-based sessions, and external development opportunities to deliver instruction at a high level.
  • Collaborate with general and special educators, coordinators, and leadership.
  • Embrace French, Spanish, and Chinese cultures by leading and participating in cultural activities for faculty and students.
